SCAM ALERT SATURDAY: GIFT CARD SCAM
Earlier this month, officers responded to a residence in the 3000 block of Irving Street on a report of a fraud incident. The victim, and elderly resident, explained that he was using his computer when a pop-up instructed him to call a 1-800 number. The victim called the number and an unknown suspect answered. The suspect told the victim that his credit card had been used for illegal gambling and pornography websites. The suspect then told the victim that the only way to get rid of the charges was to purchase $8,000 in gift cards and then to provide them with the redemption codes. The victim provided $5,000 in gift cards and provided the suspect with the redemption codes before realizing it was a scam.
The biggest red flag here — If they want a gift card redemption code, it’s a scam. As soon as someone contacts you and says that you can only remedy a problem by buying gift cards and giving them the redemption code, hang up.
