100 Years Ago in #Lakewood: Local newspapers didn't offer much coverage of the 1920 Summer Olympics in Belgium even though several countries were banned and the 1916 Berlin games had been cancelled. A short article about Ethelda Bleibtrey made it into the news in February 1921, noting her new 100-yard swimming record of just over one minute, a bit faster than her 100-meter gold medal win at the Olympics. Just the year before, Bleibtrey had been arrested for removing her stockings before swimming in a pool and public support for her was part of what led to the abandonment of stockings as part of a bathing suit.
